This was one of those projects that started out as something else. I have had a lot of success with the tawashi-style kitchen scrubbies so I figured I would try to make one incorporating Red Heart Scrubby yarn. It didn’t work out exactly as planned, but I did come up with this tawashi-inspired scrubby sleeve. It fits right over your hand for easy scrubbing, is eco-friendly/washable, and can hang from your kitchen faucet to dry. These can also be used in the bathroom to scrub tubs/tile/sinks.
They are quick to whip up and would make great gifts, giveaways, or small filler items at craft shows. I typically make these and package in sets of 3 and have had great reviews. They have quickly become a favorite among family, friends, and customers that I have shared them with. I also love that since they are combined with regular cotton yarn there are so many color combo possibilities. I especially love the theme ones I made for my mom and sister, who are Mouse fanatics!
Although I originally used the scrubby cotton yarn when creating these, I have found that I prefer the polyester scrubby yarn. The idea of a 100% cotton appealed to me but after making some with both types of scrubby, the ones made with polyester scrubby dried faster and had better scrubbing action.

Pattern for Favorite Kitchen Scrubby:
Yarn: 100% cotton worsted weight- I like Peaches & Creme
Red Heart Scrubby- I prefer the polyester over cotton
Hook: J/6.0mm
Abbreviations used:
CH- chain
SC- single crochet
sts- stitches
BLO- back loop only
Instructions:
-With cotton and scrubby held together, chain 15, turn.
Row 1: 2 SC in 2nd chain from hook, 1 SC in each of next 11 sts, SC last 2 sts together. CH 1, turn. (14 sts)
* Working in BLO from here on*
Row 2: SC first two stitches together, 1 SC in each of next 11 sts, 2 SC in last st. CH 1, turn. (14 sts)
Row 3: 2 SC in first stitch, 1 SC in each of next 11 sts, SC last two stitches together. CH 1, turn. (14 sts)
-you will notice that your sides are not straight, they should be slanted.
*Repeat rows 2 & 3 until your piece is 16 rows long.
-Leaving a long tail on the cotton, cut and finish off. I do not leave a long tail on the scrubby yarn, just enough to weave and hide ends. I use the cotton to finish off as it is easier to sew with.
– Lay your piece flat vertically, fold the bottom corner up to the middle of the piece and the top corner down. Whip stitch closed working diagonally as shown with my crochet hook in the photo below, you will end your sewing at your initial beginning tail, so you can secure them together and weave in all ends.
Once you close up the seam and weave in the ends you can turn it inside out to help hide the seam, however with the scrubby yarn it pretty much hides itself. You will be left with a sleeve that you can slip over your fingers. I absolutely love washing dishes with these, it makes it very easy to wash silverware and get a good scrub without having a dishcloth flapping water all around.
I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do!

Love this Scrubby. Can I ask as to what polyester yarn did you use for this? Thank you for this pattern 🙂
Thank you! I used Red Heart Scrubby.
I don’t understand about working in BLO. Can you please explain in more detail.
Thanks,
Marie
Hello! There are some great youtube tutorials on back loop only that can explain better, but when you typically crochet you go through the hole under the “v” that is made on the top of your previous row (both loops of the stitch). When you BLO, you only go through the back side of the “v” that is made, so insert your hook on the top between the “v” and go through to the back of your work, then pull up a loop and continue with your SC.
I really love this idea! And will be trying it in the near future. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea and it seems so simple to do!!!
Love your scrubbie pattern!
